Déjà vu

PROLOGUE

I have been to this warm place before. I’ve walked through this south-facing entrance and been surrounded by the franchisy decoration.
“Can I call this déjà vu?” I asked.
Mia, the consciousness inside me, didn’t take long to reply. “Sure you can, there’s no argument against it; but please remember that circumstances are never the same.”

CHAPTER 1

An early morning dictated people’s energetic movements to get in time to office; after picking up their coffee, of course.
With a cup of hot chocolate in my hand, I could not forbear attacking myself with excitement and worded expectations. “I’m finally here, in one of the best! I did it! I’m starting to like this city, though I can’t state the same for its accent. Will I meet someone cute? “ And so on.
“Not this time, my dear.” Mia silently spoke.
After dozens of subway-rides, interminable classes and essays, several dinners and parties, and lots of hellos and good-byes, I left.
I stood there, taking off the ground and telling myself: “You were right, then. I got to know many friends, but I didn’t experience a congenial combination of interests and traits. Not a single one.”
Mia, looking bushed, returned from being distracted by the snowy scene hundreds of meters below. “Did you know that patience is a good quality? I’m sure you know, but things have come so easily these days that you tend to forget where you come from.
“Yeah, I know. I could be a little more patient.”
“Well, let’s leave this philosophic talk for later and take a nap right now! As usual, our packing habits made us skip the sleeping part of last night.”

CHAPTER 2

“We’re getting better!” Mia said excited.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that last night we slept for almost Three hours. And I appreciate it, I have to say, since a long and vigorous day awaits us.” I shrugged.
I was nowhere to be seen or heard, at least by the people who know me.
While eating a healthy sandwich I waited for the last half of the journey to begin. I had not planned on going back so soon (or going back at all), but I was happy it turned out to be that way.
It was going to be such a great surprise for him!

CHAPTER 3

Somewhat lost but with a clear goal in mind, I kept walking.
“Oh my god! This ought to be that street. Look at that sign over there.” Mia spoke again.
“Yes, this is it. Life is gracious, isn’t it?” A thrilling excitement dispersed widely through my body.
I was there, again, taking shelter from the icy weather outside and asking for a small hot chocolate.
Still, that scene was different from the one guarded in memory, different for good: the love of my life was by my side.
He talked, not looking away from the menu board. “I’ll also have a hot chocolate, love.”
“I’m so happy to be here, with you.”
Then it was Mia who spoke, but her voice was only audible to me. “We’re always happy with him, wherever we are, whatever we do.”

“I see...”
“I told you to be patient, didn’t I? And fortunately, he happens to think like me.”
